HEST started with a simple idea: sleeping outside should actually BE comfortable.
We built our first products around bringing the comfort of home into the outdoors- starting with better sleep and rethinking what a camping mattress could be.
But eventually, another question came up:
Why should comfort stop when you get out of bed?
That question kicked off the design journey behind the HEST Foamy Camp Chair and our move from engineering better sleep to engineering better relaxation outdoors.
It came from listening to our customers, watching how people use HEST gear at camp, and recognizing a gap. People were investing in incredibly comfortable sleep systems, then spending the rest of their time sitting in chairs that prioritized portability over almost everything else.
We saw an opportunity to approach seating the same way we approached sleep: start with comfort, then engineer everything else around it.
And we already had the perfect material to build from- enhanced memory foam.
That usually means lightweight fabric stretched over a folding frame. It's portable and familiar, but comfort is often the compromise.
We flipped that thinking.
Instead of starting with pack size, our team looked to one of the most iconic pieces of outdoor furniture: the Adirondack chair. Its reclined position, supportive angles, and wide armrests are designed around one thing; settling in and staying awhile.
That became the inspiration for the Foamy Camp Chair. We still needed it to travel.
We still needed it to survive dirt, weather, campgrounds, road trips, and years of use. But those requirements had to work around comfort rather than replace it.
The Foamy Camp Chair brings that expertise above ground.
Its removable cushion uses two layers of enhanced memory foam engineered to remain comfortable across changing outdoor temperatures. Instead of hanging from a piece of fabric, you're sitting on a supportive cushion- creating an experience much closer to your favorite chair at home.
The cushion also became a product within the product. Remove it from the frame and it can be used independently around camp, on other compatible chairs, or even in a vehicle during a long road trip.
That versatility became one of the breakthroughs of the design process.
HEST Founder Aaron Ambuske and VP of Product Darrin Haugin, who share a storied career past together, worked alongside the design team in Seattle to take the Foamy Camp Chair through rounds of sketches, prototypes, materials, mechanisms, and testing.
The challenge wasn't simply making a comfortable chair. It was making a HEST-level comfortable chair that still worked outside.
Every element had to earn its place- from the angle of the seat and position of the cushion to the folding mechanism and frame construction.
Some of the most useful ideas came from doing something incredibly sophisticated: sitting in a lot of chairs.
That process led to details like EasyRise armrestswith integrated support handles, detachable cup holders, a durable aluminum-alloy frame rated to 500 pounds, and dirt- and water-resistant materials ready for actual camp life.
Individually, they're small decisions. Together, they change how the chair feels and functions.
Outdoor gear gets dragged through dirt, tossed into vehicles, left around campfires, exposed to weather, and used season after season. We wanted the Foamy Camp Chair to be designed for that reality.
That meant choosing durable materials, but it also meant thinking about what happens years down the road.
Components were designed with repairability in mind so that if something eventually wears out, the answer isn't automatically replacing the entire chair.
Because creating a premium product shouldn't just mean making it comfortable. It should mean making something worth keeping.
It's about everything that happens once you sit down.
Another cup of coffee in the morning. Another hour around the campfire. Dinner that turns into drinks. A conversation that keeps going because nobody is quite ready to head to bed.
For years, HEST has focused on helping people sleep better outside so they can enjoy more of the experience.
The Foamy Camp Chair takes that same philosophy into the other relaxing part of camping, sitting.
Because the goal was never simply to make camping more comfortable. It's to make you want to stay outside longer and enjoy it.
