Ground Tent Mattress Sizing Guide

HEST Foamy pads are the perfect choice for tent camping. Lightweight, packable, and built to roll up and go — they connect side-by-side with integrated clips so you can build the right sleeping surface for any tent size. When measuring your tent floor, subtract 4–6 inches from each side to account for sloped tent walls — the usable flat sleeping area is always smaller than the listed tent dimensions.

Height guide: All Foamy models are 78" long (except the Short at 64"). At 6' or taller stick with Regular or Wide. At 6'2"+ and 200+ lbs, the Foamy Wide gives meaningful extra shoulder room.

Note: Dimensions shown are above wheel wells. Without a platform, the Dually's memory foam squeezes between wheel wells comfortably. If a mattress is 3–5" too wide or long, the foam will compress or curl without affecting sleep performance. We always recommend measuring your sleep space before purchasing.

Rooftop Tent (RTT) Mattress Sizing Guide

HEST mattresses are one of the most popular upgrades for rooftop tent owners. Before purchasing, confirm your RTT can accommodate a 3.9" thick memory foam mattress when closed. You will likely need to remove the stock mattress that came with your RTT to make room.

Hard shell RTTs can typically keep the HEST mattress inside when closed — no removal needed.
Soft shell RTTs cannot close with a HEST mattress inside. For all soft shell RTTs we recommend the Foamy — it rolls up quickly and removes easily every time you set up or close your tent. Solo sleepers: one Foamy. Couples: two linked Foamys.
For RTTs not listed: Measure your platform length and width and match to the closest product. Hard shell — match to the closest Dually size. Soft shell — one Foamy (solo) or two linked Foamys (couple), remove each time.
Note: Always test-close your RTT after first setup before your first trip. You will likely need to remove the stock mattress to make room for the HEST.

HEST mattresses are a popular choice for van life and camper van builds. The Dually Custom S was designed specifically for vans — its curved end fits perfectly between rear doors and its bi-fold design folds out of the way during the day. How to choose S60 vs S75

The Custom S comes in two lengths — 60" and 75". Measure the usable length of your van sleeping platform to decide. The S75 gives more legroom for taller sleepers. The S60 works well in tighter builds or where gear storage at the foot of the bed is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the wheel wells in my truck bed be a problem?
No. HEST mattresses are 100% memory foam, which forms around wheel wells without affecting comfort or sleep performance. The foam compresses and molds to fit your space. If a mattress is 3–5" too wide, it will squeeze into place on its own.
Do I need a platform in my truck bed?
Not necessarily. A platform raises the mattress above the wheel wells for a flat sleeping surface, but the Dually's memory foam will compress around wheel wells without one. A platform improves fit but is optional for most truck beds.
Can I connect two Foamy pads together?
Yes. Every Foamy has integrated linking clips that connect pads side-by-side. You can link any number of Foamys together. Two Foamy Regulars linked = 78" × 50". Two Foamy Wides linked = 78" × 60". Mix Regular and Wide in any combination. Shop the Foamy →
Can I add a Dually Extend to my Foamy?
No. The Dually Extend is designed to clip onto Dually models only — it is not compatible with the Foamy. To expand a Foamy setup, add another Foamy and link them together using the integrated clips.
Will my rooftop tent close with a HEST mattress inside?
It depends on your RTT. Hard shell RTTs can typically accommodate the HEST mattress (3.9" thick) when closed. Soft shell RTTs cannot close with the mattress inside — you will need to remove and roll up the Foamy each time you pack up. We recommend the Foamy for all soft shell RTTs because it rolls up quickly.
What size HEST mattress fits a Toyota Tacoma?
For a Tacoma long bed: Dually Long (78" × 50") on a platform or squeezed between wheel wells. For a Tacoma short bed: Dually Short (64" × 50") on a platform with tailgate down. This applies to both 2nd Gen (2005–2015) and 3rd Gen (2016–present).
What fits in a Mercedes Sprinter or Ford Transit van?
Both vans have a cargo floor width of approximately 70". We recommend the Dually Custom S — it was designed specifically for vans with a curved end that fits between rear doors. Measure your cargo length to choose between the S60 and S75.
What is the Dually Custom S and how does it fold?
The Dually Custom S is HEST's van-specific mattress. Its curved end fits perfectly between the rear doors of a camper van. It folds horizontally — the width folds, making it shorter for daytime gear storage. All other Dually models fold vertically.
What HEST mattress fits a Go Fast Camper (GFC)?
The Dually Platform 50 is purpose-built for the GFC Standard Platform. It fits perfectly inside a closed GFC — no removal needed when traveling.
I'm 6'2" and 230 lbs. Which size should I get?
Go with the Wide. At that height and build, the extra 5" of width on the Foamy Wide (78" × 30") makes a meaningful difference in shoulder room and overall comfort compared to the Regular (78" × 25"). Length is the same on both.
Can I use a HEST mattress in a ground tent?
Yes — the Foamy is the best choice for tent camping. It's lightweight, rolls up compact, and the linking clips let you build a custom sleeping surface for any tent size. We do not recommend the Dually for ground tents.
What if my sleeping space doesn't match any standard size?
Linked Foamys are the most flexible solution for odd or custom dimensions. You can combine any number of Regular and Wide Foamys to get close to your exact space. Memory foam also compresses 3–5" without affecting sleep, so a slightly oversized mattress will usually work fine.
